In this project, I draw upon Simone de Beauvoir’s notion of women as “The Other” to explore the ways in which women continue to be discriminated against in a society that may be equal on its face.
I try to capture the discrimination women experience with the corset-like top and warmer pieces. By creating a corset to wear over the trench coat, rather than beneath it, I visualize forms of discrimination that is unseen and therefore dismissed as trivial. The warmer not only hides one’s hands but encourages passivity and dependence; with all its ribbons, the warmer can only be worn with another’s help.
